Greek letter writers, exempli gratia, satisfied themselves with variations of \u03a0\u03bb\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03c4\u1ff6 \u0394\u03af\u03c9\u03bd\u03b9 \u03b5\u1f56 \u03c0\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd (or instead of \u03b5\u1f56 \u03c0\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd: \u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd): Plato (hopes) Dion flourishes (or is happy).  A typical Latin salutation is: M.Tullius Cicero M. Varroni S.D (Marcus Tullius Cicero greets Marcus Varro). S.D. = Salutem dicit.  SPD = Salutem Plurimam dicit.  Pliny in the first century AD added &#8216;suus&#8217; : C.Plinius Sabino&nbsp;<em>suo<\/em> SD.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the medieval period and on into the renaissance, the salutation gained greater weight and length, full of scraping and bowing.  Erasmus in de epistolis conscribendis gives us a few examples for fun: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perspicacissimo domino, septem artium liberalium calendabro aureo. <br>Radianti theologorum apici. <br>Religioniis lucernae semper fulgenti.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using the &#8220;Salutationes&#8221; link in Slack, and the greetings on the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/courses.jeanneneumann.com\/lat350\/cicero-on-writing-letters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Cicero on Letters (opens in a new tab)\">Cicero on Letters<\/a>&#8221; page as well as the sheets I handed out in class, please send a couple of your classmates a note.
