My best advice is to look carefully at the letters we read this term.  Some of the qualities valued on the peer review page don&#8217;t translate easily or well.  They will be almost always better expressed by verbal phrasing than just a list of nouns and adjectives.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Character and Personality<\/strong><br><em>The following ratings will be used to compare this student with other very capable students. &nbsp;Please make them as realistic as you can in comparison with outstanding students applying to other leading institutions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Leadership<\/strong>: I think this is getting at the respect accrued to someone because they seem to know what they are doing&#8211;not really just someone who pushes to the front to take charge, but someone whom others don\u2019t mind taking charge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>consilium capere posse&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinitium.com\/lewisshort?p=cons%C4%ADlium\">Latinitium<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinitium.com\/lewisshort?p=gr%C4%81tia\">gratia<\/a>: favor one finds with others (a word that is important and has a lot of senses)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Self-confidence<\/strong>: \u201ca&nbsp;feeling&nbsp;of&nbsp;trust&nbsp;in&nbsp;one&#8217;s&nbsp;abilities,&nbsp;qualities, and&nbsp;judgment\u201d; syn: &nbsp;morale,&nbsp;confidence,&nbsp;self-assurance,&nbsp;assurance,&nbsp;assertiveness,&nbsp;self-reliance,&nbsp;self-possession,&nbsp;composure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>to have c.,&nbsp;<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/727FF228-21B5-42BD-BD4C-BA4F3507DC6A\/lewisshort?p=f%C4%ABdo\">f\u012bdo<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/727FF228-21B5-42BD-BD4C-BA4F3507DC6A\/lewisshort?p=conf%C4%ABdo\">conf\u012bdo<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/727FF228-21B5-42BD-BD4C-BA4F3507DC6A\/lewisshort?p=f%C4%ABsus\">f\u012bsus<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinitium.com\/lewisshort?p=sum\">sum<\/a>, 3&nbsp;intransitive<\/li><li><em>fiducia sui<\/em>, self-confidence, boldness, courage&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/latin.packhum.org\/search?q=fiducia+sui\">PHI<\/a><\/li><li><em>bonum animum habere&nbsp;<\/em>(courage)<\/li><li><em>praesenti animo uti &#8211;<\/em>to possess presence of mind<em>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Independence<\/strong>: not depending on another; capable of thinking and acting for oneself;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>legally:&nbsp;<em>sui iuris esse<\/em>; liber, libera, liberum&nbsp;<\/li><li>personally:&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>suo consilio uti<\/em>;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>suo iudicio uti<\/em>&#8211; to go one&#8217;s own way, proceed independently<\/li><li><em>suo more vivere&nbsp;<\/em>(this seems not really a compliment)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Character and Integrity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>note:&nbsp;<em>integritas, integritatis<\/em>does not mean \u201cintegrity\u201d in our sense but rather wholeness \u201cthe undiminished or unimpaired condition of a thing.\u201d I think integrity here means \u201chonesty, respectablity\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><li><em>honestus, a,um&nbsp;<\/em>: respectable&nbsp;<\/li><li><em>opinionem virtutis habere&nbsp;<\/em>&#8211; to have the reputation of virtue<em>.<\/em><\/li><li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinitium.com\/lewisshort?s=mos\">mores<\/a><\/em><\/li><li>poetic:&nbsp;<em>integer vitae scelerisque purus&nbsp;<\/em>(Horace)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reaction to criticism<\/strong>: this has to be done with a verb phrase<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>how you take something: ferre + adverb<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinitium.com\/smithhall?s=kindness\">Concern for others<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>bene merens (merens, merentis) or bene meritus\/ merita de + ablative of person&nbsp;<\/li><li>benevolens, benevolentis&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinitium.com\/lewisshort?s=consulo\">consulere<\/a><\/li><li>cura; curare<\/li><li>humanitas; humanus, a, um<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinitium.com\/lewisshort?s=benignus\">benignus<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Respect accorded by classmates<\/strong>: this one is easy (but don\u2019t use \u201chabere\u201d! use fruor, frui, fructum or utor, uti usum or something &#8211;both take ablative)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>honor<\/li><li>dignitas<\/li><li>optima fides et fama <\/li><li>honestus, a,um: regarded with honor\u00a0<\/li><li>dignus, a, um (+ablative of respect)<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I started working on the list that Davidson gives for its peer review page.
